Spicy Cilantro Game Day Guacamole is as fresh as a Mexican Restaurant’s tableside guacamole, yet even better because you can customize it to your taste! For example, would you like chunky or creamy guacamole?

Guacamole is easy to make even though it is homemade from scratch with fresh ingredients and guacamole seasoning! It is bursting with flavor!

My family and I have been making guacamole for as long as I can remember. We make it for game day, for every party, and enjoy eating it at our favorite Mexican restaurants too.

Each family member has their favorite customizations of guacamole. I like my guacamole to be spicy, and with cilantro and chopped tomatoes, onions, and chili peppers. My sister does not want cilantro near the guacamole and leaves out the tomatoes. My nephew likes it way more spicy than me.

Therefore, I have years of experience making guacamole, and I’m sharing my favorite guacamole as well as the methods that I use to make it.

What Is Guacamole?

Guacamole is:

  • A creamy Mexican avocado Dip, made with mashed avocados and chopped tomatoes, onions, and chilies.
  • Often served with Tortilla Chips and other Mexican Food Recipes, like Queso, Mexican Shrimp Cocktail,  multiple salsas like Pico De Gallo, Mango Salsa, Peach Salsa, Corn and Zucchini Salsa, or Pineapple Salsa, along with your favorite margarita, like a Peach Margarita, and often followed by more Mexican Food, like Tortilla Soup, Tex-Mex Enchiladas, Beef Fajitas, or Chicken Fajitas.

Why You’ll Love Guacamole

You’ll love guacamole because it is:

  • Deliciously rich and creamy with lots of flavor from the avocado, tomatoes, onions, garlic, chili peppers, etc.
  • A perfect dip to go with chips.
  • Very popular at parties, like game day parties.
  • Made with fresh, vibrant ingredients, like avocados, tomatoes, onions, chili peppers, so you don’t have to feel guilty eating it.
  • Fits into just about every diet or meal plan so all your family and friends can enjoy it.

What Equipment Do I Need?

  • Molcajete – A Mexican mortar and Pestle set that is used to mash the avocados.
  • Mixing Bowl – If you don’t have a Molcajete, then use a mixing bowl to mash the avocados and make the rest of the guacamole.
  • Spoon or Fork – You’ll need a spoon or fork to mash the avocados if you don’t have a Molcajete.
  • Mexican Style Serving Bowl – A pretty Mexican-style bowl for serving the guacamole.

What Goes In Guacamole?

Guacamole Ingredients

  • Avocados – You’ll need fresh, ripe avocados.
  • Red Onion – Chop up a red onion.
  • Fresh Lime juice – Don’t skip this as it is very important for both flavor and keeping the guacamole green. You could use lemon juice instead if you don’t have limes.
  • Fresh Cilantro (optional) – People are divided about cilantro. If you love it, add it. If you don’t, then just leave it out. The guacamole will still be delicious.
  • Serrano Chili Pepper or Jalapeño Pepper (optional) – If you like it spicy, throw in some chili peppers, like Serrano peppers or jalapeño peppers. If you like it mild, leave them out.
  • Chopped Tomato – I recommend using fresh tomatoes and not canned diced tomatoes.
  • Minced Garlic – I like to add a little minced garlic.
  • Salt and Pepper – Use as much or as little as you like.
  • Tortilla Chips – It is a vehicle to get the guacamole to your mouth!

What Guacamole Seasoning Do You Use?

The only ingredients I use in guacamole are the ones you see above listed under Guacamole ingredients. The flavor comes from the fresh ingredients and not from any special guacamole seasoning, per se. As you can see above, I only add salt and pepper, and no other seasoning.

How To Make Guacamole Step By Step

  1. Peel and scoop out the avocados, discarding the seed, and place in a bowl or molcajete.
  2. Mash the avocados thoroughly.
  3. Add the chopped tomatoes.
  4. Add the chopped onions, minced garlic, salt and pepper, and chopped cilantro.
  5. Squeeze in some fresh lime juice.
  6. Stir so all ingredients are evenly distributed through the dip. Serve immediately while fresh.

Recipe Tips For The Best Guacamole

  • Use all fresh ingredients, including fresh avocados, tomatoes and cilantro.
  • Use freshly squeezed lime juice and not imitation lime juice.
  • Make sure that the avocados are ripe, but not overly ripe or your guacamole will be mushy. You can tell that the avocados are ripe by the color and firmness.
    • They should be a deep green color to purple, but not black. If they have turned black, then they are overripe. If they are brown under the stem, then they are past their prime.
    • Avocados should be firm, yet not hard, and should not have any soft spots.
  • Add in the chili peppers little by little and taste as you go to ensure that it won’t be too spicy.
  • Guacamole is best served immediately after being made.
  • To prevent the guacamole from turning brown, squeeze a little more lime juice over the top.

What To Eat With Guacamole

  • Serve with Tortilla Chips, or other chips or vegetables to use as dippers.
  • Serve with your favorite salsa and queso!
  • Use it as a topper to Salads, Tacos, Enchiladas, Chicken Empanadas, and Quesadillas.
  • Spread it on a piece of toast for Spicy Avocado Toast.
  • Pair it with other party appetizers like Ham and Swiss Sliders, Ham Salad Pinwheels, and Mexican Shrimp Cocktail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Freeze Guacamole?

Technically, you can, but you may not want to. The reason is that guacamole loses its flavor and creamy texture. My recommendation is make only the amount you need right now.

How To Keep Guacamole From Turning Brown

Squeeze some lime juice or lemon juice on top of the guacamole.

How Long Does Guacamole Last?

Guacamole lasts from 1 to 3 days in the refrigerator. However, homemade guacamole has the best texture and flavor when served fresh.

Is Guacamole Vegan?

Yes. This Guacamole recipe is vegan because all the ingredients are plant-based.

Is Guacamole Keto?

Yes. Guacamole is low carb and is considered Keto.

Is Guacamole Good For You?

Since it is all plant-based from from fresh ingredients, yes it is. You can eat this and be guilt-free.

Hi Debi! Thanks for visiting. Your team had an incredible year. Too bad you have to wait awhile until next season. However, that does not mean you have to wait to try this recipe. It is great any time.
