What Is In Crack Slaw or Eggroll In A Bowl?
This is a popular low carb recipe made with ground beef and cabbage, as well as other vegetables. It is definitely not your Mama’s slaw recipe.
Below is a list of ingredients, as well as substitutions, that would work well in this Eggroll In a Bowl (Crack Slaw) recipe. Scroll down to the bottom of the blog post to view the printable recipe card that has specific amounts of each ingredient.
- Ground Beef, Ground Pork, Ground Chicken, or Ground Turkey. Pick your protein. Beef, Pork, Chicken or Turkey will work. I used 85% lean ground beef. You could also combine beef and pork for a different twist.
- Coleslaw Mix. Shredded cabbage is an ingredient. As a shortcut, I used a packaged coleslaw mix that has shredded cabbage, red cabbage, and some shredded carrots. Broccoli slaw, made of shredded broccoli, could also be used as well. It would give it a little more crunchy texture. If your package of coleslaw mix includes a package for a sauce, do NOT use that in this recipe.
- Shredded Carrots. To add additional color and nutrition, I add 1/2 cup additional shredded carrots to the coleslaw. You could also add other vegetables as well, such as red or green bell peppers.
- Oil. use sesame oil, if you have it. Otherwise, you can use olive oil, avocado oil or your favorite oil to cook the onions, garlic, and ground beef. Sesame oil has a very unique flavor. However, unless you plan to use it in other recipes, I don’t recommend going out to buy it just for the small amount used in this Eggroll In A Bowl (Crack Slaw) recipe.
- Onion. Chopped onion is added to the ground beef.
- Garlic. Two cloves of garlic are minced and added to the ground beef.
- Ginger. I recommend using fresh ginger. However, ground ginger could be substituted.
- Soy Sauce. Soy sauce gives this recipe a lot of flavor. You can use gluten-free soy sauce or Coconut Aminos, which is a healthy gluten-free alternative to soy sauce.
- Rice Vinegar. Often combined with soy sauce in Asian dishes, it is sweeter than most other vinegar. If you don’t have it, try using apple cider vinegar or white vinegar as a substitute.
- Sriracha. Sriracha is a unique hot sauce often used in Asian dishes. If you don’t have it, you can use another type of chili garlic sauce or any type of hot sauce you like.
- Green Onions. Chop a couple of green onions to add as a garnish on top of the Eggroll In A Bowl (Crack Slaw).
- Sesame Seeds. Sprinkle with a tablespoon of sesame seeds over the top of the dish before serving,

Leftovers???
Michele says
Hi Betty,
You can place any leftovers in an airtight container and place in the refrigerator for 3 days. To reheat, you can reheat in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes or reheat in a skillet over medium heat.
Thanks,
Michele

Oh my gosh, this is so good. I used ground pork and used 2 bags of cole slaw mix. I only had ground fresh ginger out of a tube which I really like.
I used sesame oil to fry in than made tripled a mix of soy sause, rice wine vinegar and a bit of Hoision sauce for a kick. Soooooo good and fast!
Kelly says
Good, but:
Salt in layers as you add them, double the coleslaw and carrots, and at least double the liquids.
We will probably try again with those changes.
Michele says
Hi Kelly,
I’m glad you liked the recipe with the tweaks. Thanks for letting me know your preferences. In general, I don’t add a lot of salt in my recipes because you can always add more salt but you can’t take it away, and many people have to limit their amount of salt. I love vegetables, and used a whole bag of coleslaw, and added extra shredded carrots to the recipe, but if you want to use more, go for it.
Thanks,
Michele

I loved it and when reheated for lunch at work- everyone was like OMG that smells delicious! I think the sesame oil is a must too.
I omitted sriracha. Threw in more ginger/garlic/ salt. Also added about a tablespoon of brown sugar and a few drops of fish sauce since I already had it.
James says
used ground ginger and used a little yum-yum sauce to finish it off it came out amazing
Sally says
I thought it was very salty and would add a little brown sugar to even out the taste. Or use teriyaki sauce. And more cabbage and carrots
Michele says
Hi Sally,
Thanks for the feedback. Soy Sauce, Coconut Aminos, and Teriyaki Sauce are all high in sodium. Increasing the brown sugar is a good idea to offset the saltiness. Another option is to use a reduced sodium version of Soy, Coconut Aminos, or Teriyaki sauce.
Thanks,
Michele

Getting ready to make this. Do I not drain the juices from the hamburger meat?
Michele says
Hi Wanda,
I did not drain the ground beef. I added the slaw and it can soak up the juices.
THanks,
Michele

Have you ever tried scrambling a couple of eggs in with the eggs while sautéing the onions and garlic? Do you think that would be good?
Michele says
Hi Heather,
Yes, I have done that with some stir fry recipes. I think that would be delicious. Give it a try and let me know how you like it.
Thanks,
Michele
