What Is In Crack Slaw or Eggroll In A Bowl?
This is a popular low carb recipe made with ground beef and cabbage, as well as other vegetables. It is definitely not your Mama’s slaw recipe.
Below is a list of ingredients, as well as substitutions, that would work well in this Eggroll In a Bowl (Crack Slaw) recipe. Scroll down to the bottom of the blog post to view the printable recipe card that has specific amounts of each ingredient.
- Ground Beef, Ground Pork, Ground Chicken, or Ground Turkey. Pick your protein. Beef, Pork, Chicken or Turkey will work. I used 85% lean ground beef. You could also combine beef and pork for a different twist.
- Coleslaw Mix. Shredded cabbage is an ingredient. As a shortcut, I used a packaged coleslaw mix that has shredded cabbage, red cabbage, and some shredded carrots. Broccoli slaw, made of shredded broccoli, could also be used as well. It would give it a little more crunchy texture. If your package of coleslaw mix includes a package for a sauce, do NOT use that in this recipe.
- Shredded Carrots. To add additional color and nutrition, I add 1/2 cup additional shredded carrots to the coleslaw. You could also add other vegetables as well, such as red or green bell peppers.
- Oil. use sesame oil, if you have it. Otherwise, you can use olive oil, avocado oil or your favorite oil to cook the onions, garlic, and ground beef. Sesame oil has a very unique flavor. However, unless you plan to use it in other recipes, I don’t recommend going out to buy it just for the small amount used in this Eggroll In A Bowl (Crack Slaw) recipe.
- Onion. Chopped onion is added to the ground beef.
- Garlic. Two cloves of garlic are minced and added to the ground beef.
- Ginger. I recommend using fresh ginger. However, ground ginger could be substituted.
- Soy Sauce. Soy sauce gives this recipe a lot of flavor. You can use gluten-free soy sauce or Coconut Aminos, which is a healthy gluten-free alternative to soy sauce.
- Rice Vinegar. Often combined with soy sauce in Asian dishes, it is sweeter than most other vinegar. If you don’t have it, try using apple cider vinegar or white vinegar as a substitute.
- Sriracha. Sriracha is a unique hot sauce often used in Asian dishes. If you don’t have it, you can use another type of chili garlic sauce or any type of hot sauce you like.
- Green Onions. Chop a couple of green onions to add as a garnish on top of the Eggroll In A Bowl (Crack Slaw).
- Sesame Seeds. Sprinkle with a tablespoon of sesame seeds over the top of the dish before serving,

Yum!! I’ve made it several times now and every time I’m reminded how good it is again! I make it with 12oz of impossible meat and 4 Oz chopped mushrooms .. and I use coleslaw AND broccoli slaw! I also do 1 and a third of the reduced sodium soy sauce / vinegar / sriracha measurements because of the added “slaws”. And serve it over a scoop of brown rice. I’m drooling writing about it and can’t wait to have it for dinner tonight!!

I made this Egg Roll Slaw tonight go along with bbq hamburgers and hot dogs. Everyone loved it and my daughter wants the recipe. This will be great for fast dinner with side of rice or cauliflower rice. We will be making it often and going to try your Mexican and Greek slaws too.

We have a vegetarian in the house. Could we use tofu or some meat substitute for this recipe?
Michele says
Hi Shirley,
Yes, you could use tofu or textured soy protein instead of the ground beef.
Thanks,
Michele

Loved this recipe, didn’t have the ginger but will try to add it next time. We used both coleslaw mix and broccoli slaw and it was so delicious!! We had it with a little bit of sticky rice but I’m sure it would go well with any rice! Thanks so much for sharing! We will be eating this regularly now and sharing with everyone we know

I made this and used chili paste instead of sriracha sauce and no beef. I marinated pork chops in an Asian marinade and cooked them in the oven. Together they were delicious!
Barbara says
Made it tonight with broccoli slaw, matchstick carrots and ground pork. Needed a little more soy sauce & hot sauce. Really good!
Karen P says
This was fabulous! I made it the first time with the ground beef and coleslaw mix but used bell peppers instead of carrots. This time my protein was a baked piece of salmon. To add some healthy fats lost from not using the beef, I added some coconut oil which gave it a delicious added flavor, Thank you for a great recipe!
Jackie says
Can I use a dressing of some kind?
Michele says
Hi Jackie,
If you don’t want to use the sauce created from soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sriracha in the recipe, you could purchase an Asian or sesame dressing instead.
Thanks,
Michele
