Ingredients
Below, I discuss the ingredients and possible substitutions if you don’t have a specific ingredient. However, if you are looking for the specific measurements of each ingredient, scroll down to the bottom of this article, just above the comments, for the printable recipe card, which includes all the ingredients and the specific amounts of each one.
For the Chicken Marinade:
- Dill Pickle Juice. The original grilled chicken sandwich has a lemon-herb flavor. However, instead of lemon juice, I used dill pickle juice to give it that tangy flavor that will be offset by the sweetness of the powdered sugar.
- Powdered Sugar. This adds sweetness to balance out the dill pickle juice.
- Whole Milk. I use milk in this marinade because the lactic acid in the milk helps to tenderize the chicken breast.
- Seasonings: I used garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, kosher salt, and smoked paprika. However, you can use your favorite seasoning blend. If you want it spicy, add some chipotle chili powder, and/or cayenne pepper.
- Boneless skinless chicken breasts. I used 2 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts. You’ll need to slice the large chicken pieces in half lengthwise so I ended up with four thin chicken breasts for the sandwiches.

For the Honey Roasted BBQ Sauce:
- Mayonnaise. I used regular mayonnaise. However, you could use Miracle Whip if you prefer. I’m not going to debate either one. Some people love one and not the other and vice versa.
- Sweet BBQ sauce. You can use your favorite sweet barbecue sauce.
- Honey. This adds additional sweetness to the barbecue sauce.
- Dijon Mustard. The dijon mustard adds some tang to the sauce. If you don’t have Dijon mustard, you could use regular mustard or spicy brown mustard instead.
- Lemon Juice. I recommend using fresh lemon juice, however, if you don’t have it, then jarred lemon juice concentrate will work.
- Smoked Paprika. I used smoked paprika. However, you could use regular paprika or sweet paprika.
For the Grilled Chicken Club Sandwiches
- Marinated Grilled chicken breasts. You’ll need the cooked marinated chicken breasts to make the sandwich.
- Prepared Honey Roasted BBQ Sauce. You’ll need a batch of the prepared BBQ sauce.
- Pepper Jack or Colby Jack Cheese. I like to use pepper jack cheese, however, Colby jack is another cheese option that Chick Fil A offers. Of course, you can use whatever cheese you like.
- Multigrain Brioche Buns. Ideally, use multigrain brioche buns to match the original Chick Fil A Grilled Chicken Club. However, you could use regular hamburger buns if you wish.
- Green leaf lettuce. I feel that the green leaf lettuce provides the best presentation. However, you could use iceberg lettuce if that is what you have.
- Beefsteak tomato slices. For those big, red, juicy tomato slices, use beefsteak tomatoes. However, you could use whichever tomatoes you have on hand.
- Applewood smoked bacon. You’ll need some cooked Applewood smoked bacon to match the original sandwich.

- Add the chicken to the marinade and make sure that all sides of the chicken are coated. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 4 hours.
- Preheat the grill over medium heat. Grill the chicken, turning occasionally until an internal temperature reaches 165°F in the thickest part of the chicken breast, up to 15 minutes total. - Cheese Swap. They offer pepper jack cheese or Colby Jack cheese to top the sandwich. You can use whatever cheese you want but it would no longer be a copycat recipe.
- Storage. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days unassembled.
- Reheating. Warm the chicken in the microwave or oven until just heated through or it may become dry.
- Freezing. Freeze leftover chicken for up to 3 months.

Variations
- Spicy Grilled Chicken Sandwich – Add some chili powder, chipotle chili powder, or cayenne pepper to the marinade of the grilled chicken to turn it into a Spicy grilled chicken sandwich.
- Chick Fil A Grilled Chicken Wrap – Skip the bun and make either a grilled chicken lettuce wrap by wrapping the chicken in large lettuce leaves, or use a whole grain tortilla for a copycat Chick Fil A Grilled Chicken Wrap.
- Naked Chicken Sandwich. Make a regular copycat Chick Fil A Grilled Cheese Sandwich that leaves off the bacon, cheese, and honey roasted BBQ sauce.
- Toasted Buns. If you like the hamburger buns toasted, then brush the bottom side of each half with oil and place them on the grill for a minute or so to toast them. Watch them carefully so they don’t burn.

We LOVE these!!!
The kids were dubious as they love the crumbed chicken burgers!! But one bite and they went silent as they were so happy eating! The marinade on the chicken just made it so tasty and juicy!
And that honey roasted BBQ sauce….we fought over the leftovers to dip our fries in!
This was a winning dinner and I am one happy momma bear!
Thank you!

These were fantastic!! I made these tonight with a few substitutions since I’m trying to maintain a low calorie, low sugar diet. The sauce was so good to have with the waffle fries.
My substitutions were whole wheat buns, swerve confectioners sugar, no sugar added Baby Rays bbq sauce and avocado oil mayo. Oh and Swiss cheese because that’s what I had on hand.
Thanks for a great recipe!!
