Requiring only 6 ingredients and one baking dish, you won’t find an easier apple cobbler or apple cake! Many of these ingredients you likely already have in your pantry or freezer.

So you could make it tonight! It is great for potlucks, large family gatherings or just for a weeknight sweet treat!

What Is A Dump Cake?

A Dump Cake consists of 3 basic ingredients, cake mix, pie filling, and butter, that are “dumped” in a baking dish. It is amazing how 3 simple ingredients can create something so delicious.

For different variations, you can change out the flavor of the apple pie filling, like I did in my Peach Cobbler Dump Cake and Blueberry Dump Cake.

How To Make Apple Dump Cake

Below I discuss the ingredients that make this recipe unique. However, if you are looking for the specific measurements of all of the ingredient, be sure to scroll down to the bottom of this article, just above the comments, for the printable recipe card, which includes all all the ingredients and the specific amounts of each one.

Ingredients

  • Cake Mix (White or Yellow)
  • 2 cans Apple Pie Filling
  • 1 stick butter, sliced very thinly
  • Cinnamon
  • Caramel Sauce
Ingredients in packages sitting on counter, including red box white cake mix, 2 cans apple pie filling, a jar caramel sauce, jar of cinnamon, and one stick of butter.

Can I Make The Apple Pie Filling From Scratch?

  • Absolutely! If you prefer not to use the canned apple pie filling, you can make your own apple pie filling from scratch by using this Apple Pie Filling recipe.

Directions

  • Dump the apple pie filling in a large bowl. Sprinkle with cinnamon, and stir until all the apples are covered and the cinnamon is evenly distributed throughout the pie filling.
  • Dump the cinnamon-spiced apple pie filling into a baking dish. Spread evenly so it is level and has the same thickness on all sides.

  • Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the top of the apple pie filling mixture. Get it as even and level as possible.
White baking dish with 2nd layer of dry whit cake mix poured over the top of the Apple pie filling for the apple pie dump cake.
  • Dot the top of the cake mix with thin slices of very cold butter. It is very important to cover all the cake mix, otherwise you may have dry spots.

  • Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes or until the top of the cake is golden brown and the apple pie filling is bubbling around the sides.

I didn’t have caramel sauce on hand so I decided to use some caramel bits, and I just ‘dumped’ them in with the apple filling. Oh my! That was super delicious!
