Ingredients
Below, I discuss the ingredients and possible substitutions if you don’t have a specific ingredient. However, if you are looking for the specific measurements of each ingredient, scroll down to the bottom of this article, just above the comments, for the printable recipe card, which includes all the ingredients and the specific amounts of each one.
- Ground beef – Ground beef will add to the flavor of a classic beef burger. I tend to opt for a higher quality ground beef for my recipes as I’ve found this to increase the flavor of the dish but go ahead and use whatever you have on hand. You could also use ground sausage for these cheeseburger egg rolls.
- Salt – This always elevates the flavors in a dish. You can use table salt or kosher salt.
- Garlic and onion powder – Provide that umami flavor and get absorbed by the meat very well.
- Black pepper – I like to use freshly cracked black pepper. However, you can use regular black pepper or white pepper.
- Cumin – This Mexican seasoning adds an earthy flavor to the meat and gives it a hint of Mexican flavor.
- Cheddar – If possible, opt for a block of cheese that you shred yourself rather than pre-shredded cheese. Pre Shredded cheese, while a convenient choice, has less flavor and melts poorly. Other cheeses can also be used in these egg rolls.
- Onion – Diced. White or yellow onions work well for these egg rolls (both are sweeter tasting than other varieties of onions and are the popular choice for cheeseburger recipes).
- Dill pickles – Diced. If you don’t enjoy dill pickles, use dill relish instead. I love using dill pickles since they add to that tangy flavor of a classic burger recipe. Dill relish will provide a slightly sweeter taste.
- Egg roll wrappers – You’ll need 15 for this recipe and more if you intend to double the recipe for party appetizers. Spring roll wrappers can also be used for this recipe although they aren’t as sturdy.
- Water – For brushing the corners of the egg roll wrappers when folding and sealing the assembled egg rolls.
- Oil – For frying the cheeseburger egg rolls. Something like vegetable oil is a great choice for this recipe.
How To Make Cheeseburger Egg Rolls
How To Make Cheeseburger Filling
- Preheat 3″ of oil to 375° in a large stockpot.
- In a large skillet over medium heat add beef, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and cumin.
- Cook the seasoned ground beef until browned.
- Once cooked, remove the skillet from the heat and drain any excess fat.
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl combine cooked seasoned meat mixture, cheddar cheese, onion, and pickles.
- Gather egg roll wrappers to prepare to make the egg rolls.
How To Make Cheeseburger Egg Rolls
- Place the egg roll wrapper on a clean work surface with one corner facing you. Spoon 3 Tbsp of filling onto the center of the wrapper.
- Fold the bottom corner up and over the filling.
- Next, fold the two outward corners into the center like an envelope.
- Brush the remaining top corner with water and roll the egg roll up to seal. Repeat the rolling process with the remaining wrappers.
- Once all the egg rolls are wrapped and the oil is heated, carefully add four egg rolls to the preheated oil. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until they are sufficiently golden brown. Once cooked, remove from the pot and place on a plate or baking sheet.
- Repeat the frying process until all egg rolls are fried. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce or condiments.
Recipe Tips
- Block Cheese. Shredding your cheese from a block of cheese instead of having purchased pre-shredded cheese always seems to be best for overall taste. Freshly shredded cheese also melts better.
- Don’t Overcrowd. It’s important that you don’t overcrowd the egg rolls in the pan while frying which is why I only fry four at a time. If you do, they won’t crisp up as they should.
- Quality Ingredients. High-quality ground beef will provide maximum flavor in these egg rolls. While you can opt to use lean ground beef, regular ground beef packs a ton of flavor thanks to its fatty content in it. Just make sure that you drain off any excess fat once the ground beef has been browned otherwise it can make the mixture overly soggy.
- Drain Excess Oil. Allow any excess oil from the freshly fried egg rolls to be absorbed by placing them on a baking sheet or plate lined with paper towels. You could also place them on a wire rack on top of a tray to catch any oil drippings.
- Reheating. Egg rolls may be reheated the day after for 1 minute in the air fryer to add back some crispness to the egg roll wrappers.
Variations
- Change The Cheese. While I’ve used cheddar cheese for these cheeseburger egg rolls, you can use other cheese such as Provolone cheese, Pepper Jack, or Monterey Jack.
- Ground Beef Egg Rolls. If you would prefer a hamburger egg roll instead of a cheeseburger egg roll, then just leave out the cheese altogether.
- Dill Please. The tangy flavor and crunch provided by the dill pickles always remind me of a classic cheeseburger but dill relish could also be used.
- Spring Rolls. You can make these cheeseburger egg rolls with egg roll wrappers or with spring roll wrappers. I prefer using the egg roll wrappers since they hold together better and are usually thicker, making them extra crispy once fried.
- Change The Filling. You could add other ingredients to the filling such as Dijon Mustard and Worcestershire sauce. The mustard adds another tangy element while the Worcestershire sauce adds a salty bite.
- Choose Cooking Method. These cheeseburger egg rolls can be baked in the oven or air fried as alternative cooking methods to pan frying. See Notes Section of Recipe Card at the bottom of the post for oven and air frying methods.
- Ground Turkey. Ground turkey can be used instead of ground beef if you’d prefer a lighter version of this recipe.
- Bacon! Add some chopped bacon to the ground beef to make a bacon cheeseburger egg roll!
- Make It Spicy. Add a kick of heat to these egg rolls by drizzling some hot sauce over the ground beef mixture just prior to folding and sealing the wrappers.
What To Serve With Cheeseburger Egg Rolls
Stick with the cheeseburger theme of this dish and serve your egg rolls with a side of fries, coleslaw, or onion rings as the main meal for lunch or dinner.
You can also enjoy these cheeseburger egg rolls as appetizers or snacks alongside your favorite dipping sauce such as BBQ sauce or ranch sauce.
FAQs
WHAT IS THE TEXTURE OF THESE EGG ROLLS?
These cheeseburger egg rolls are crispy and crunchy on the outside with a soft and juicy filling consisting of flavorful ground beef, melted cheddar cheese, onion, and dill pickles.
CAN I AIR FRY THESE CHEESEBURGER EGG ROLLS?
Absolutely! The air fryer is a great choice if you’d prefer to cook with less oil and have minimal mess or cleanup to deal with while still ending up with an ultra crispy batch of egg rolls!
To air fry, these egg rolls, simply follow the recipe steps right up until the egg rolls have been assembled, then coat all sides of the egg rolls with cooking spray. Add the egg rolls in batches to the air fryer basket and cook for about 12 minutes at 375F. It’s also a good idea to flip the egg rolls mid-cook to ensure that they brown on all sides.
CAN I BAKE THESE CHEESEBURGER EGG ROLLS INSTEAD?
Yes! Baking is another way to cook these egg rolls. Once assembled, lightly brush both sides of the egg rolls with olive oil and then place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet (with the end of the wrapper facing down) to bake in the oven at 400F for about 12-13 minutes, turning each roll over halfway through the baking.
ARE THESE CHEESEBURGER EGG ROLLS GLUTEN-FREE?
No, they aren’t, as egg roll wrappers are made with regular flour. If you’d like a gluten-free cheeseburger egg roll then I suggest using spring rolls instead which are made with rice flour.
HOW SHOULD I STORE LEFTOVER CHEESEBURGER EGG ROLLS?
Store leftover egg rolls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, keeping in mind that the longer they sit in storage the softer the crispy outer wrapping will become from absorbing moisture from the filling.
Reheat these egg rolls in the oven or in an air fryer to get them crispy again.
CAN I FREEZE THESE CHEESEBURGER EGG ROLLS?
I recommend you only freeze uncooked assembled egg rolls as the wrappers won’t hold up well to the freezing and defrosting process if cooked before storage.
