For someone who claimed not to like beef, she scarfed these Beef Tips down in no time flat and was asking for more! In this case, actions speak louder than words. Of course, she also loved the Salisbury steak, Crockpot Philly Cheese Steak, Ground Beef Stroganoff, and the Tex Mex Beef Fajitas. However, she will still say she does not like beef. 🙂

How to Cook Beef Tips (With Rice)

We loved these savory Beef Tips and Rice for a hearty weeknight dinner! My elderly mother-in-law tells me she does not like beef. However, when I served her these Beef Tips and Rice for dinner the other night, and she loved it.

What Are Beef Tips?

Beef Tips are small cuts of meat that are often cut from sirloin or chuck roast. However, they can be from any cut of meat. They are then cooked in a dutch oven or slow cooker and usually served with brown gravy over mashed potatoes or rice.

What Makes This Beef Tips And Rice Recipe Work?

What I love about these Beef Tips and Rice is that they are easy to make.  I made them after work and had dinner on the table in a little over an hour.

I cooked the beef tips in a dutch oven and browned them on all sides first. Then I added the onions and green bell peppers to saute and add flavor and cook for about 5 minutes. Then I added minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth and let simmer.  Made a gravy with the leftover liquid and then had the beef tips served over rice. What type of beef to use?

I’m glad you asked. Typically a Beef Tips recipe calls for sirloin tips or tenderloin tips but many use beef stew meat, which is what I did because that is what was available at my local grocery store.

Are beef tips and stew meat the same?

Beef Tips are cut usually from a tenderloin or sirloin and are naturally tender and will cook up quickly. Whereas, beef stew meat is often cut from the shoulder and usually requires braising before becoming tender.

What Ingredients Do I Need To Make Beef Tips and Rice?

• 3 pounds top sirloin cut into 1-1/2 inch cubes (or use stew meat). You could also cut up a chuck roast.
• 2 tablespoons oil
• Freshly cracked black pepper to taste
• Sea Salt to taste
• 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
• 1 teaspoon cumin
• 1 onion sliced
• 1 green bell pepper sliced
• 1 cup sliced cremini mushrooms
• 2 teaspoons minced garlic*
• 1/4 cup Worcestershire
• 3 cups reduced-sodium beef broth**
• 1-1/2 cups cooked rice

*If you don’t have minced garlic, you could use 1 teaspoon of garlic powder instead.

**If you want more depth of flavor substitute 1 cup of red wine for 1 cup of beef broth. The red wine adds richness to the flavor.

How To Make Beef Tips and Rice?

1. In a Dutch oven over medium-high heat, add oil.
2. Season beef tips with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and cumin.
3. Add the seasoned beef tips to the hot pan and cook until browned.
4. Add the sliced onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms. Cook for about 5 minutes.
5. Reduce heat to low.
6. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute.
7. Pour in the Worcestershire sauce and the beef broth.
8. Let it simmer for about 1 hour.
9. Serve over cooked rice.

Can I Make Gravy From The Drippings?

Yes! Once the beef tips have completed cooking, you can remove them and then make a cornstarch slurry with 2 tablespoons of water and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, and then add that to the liquid in the pot. Stir and let it simmer on low for about 5 minutes and the liquid should thicken to make a very nice gravy.

What To Serve With Beef Tips And Rice?

Slow Cooker Instructions

Instead of using a dutch oven put everything, except the rice, in a crockpot and either cook on High for 3 – 4 hours or on Low for 7 – 8 hours.
