Chicken Wonton Tacos made with Chicken smothered in a Bang Bang Sauce and served in crispy wontons shaped like mini tacos.
These Asian – Mexican Fusion Appetizers, Chicken Wonton Tacos, are a mash-up of Bang Bang Chicken and Chicken Tacos but instead of being served inside corn tortillas, they are served instead in crispy wonton “taco” shells.
If you love Mexican Food and Asian Cuisine then you will love this recipe! First, the chicken is bursting with flavor from the bold, sweet heat of the Bang Bang Sauce that is made with the Sweet Red Chili Sauce. Of course, you can probably tell I love that flavor because of my Blackened Bang Bang Shrimp, and Bang Bang Chicken and Quinoa recipes.
Second, like my Pepper Steak Wonton Cups, these wonton taco “shells” give the appetizer that nice crunch, and then the bang bang chicken is topped with the cool, tangy red cabbage slaw, and garnished with chopped green onions and fresh cilantro.
When I lived in Houston, I loved the vast variety of restaurant cuisines that were available. Of course, we had Mexican and Tex-Mex food, but also we had a large number of Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and other types of Asian restaurants.
Many restaurant chefs often included Fusion dishes on their menu, and frequently those were Mexican and Asian flavor combinations. Since my husband and I enjoyed eating out, we loved that fusion flavor of the restaurant dishes. That is what inspired my Texas Thai Tacos recipe, and this Chicken Wonton Taco recipe!

Ingredients
Below I discuss the ingredients and possible substitutions in case you don’t have a specific ingredient on hand. However, if you are looking for the specific measurements of each ingredient, be sure to scroll down to the bottom of this article, just above the comments, for the printable recipe card, which includes all the ingredients and the specific amounts of each one.
Bang Bang Sauce
- Sweet chili sauce – This recipe calls for the Asian sweet red chili sauce, not the tomato based chili sauce. However, you could substitute the Garlic Chili Sauce (like Sriracha) if you don’t have the sweet chili sauce. To make the most authentic Bang Bang sauce, which is most like the Bonefish Grill version, then be sure to use this brand of Sweet Chili Sauce. (Amazon affiliate link.)
- Mayonnaise – This adds creaminess to the sauce. Of course, if you are looking for a more wholesome option, then you could substitute Greek yogurt instead.
- Sriracha – I personally think that there is no substitute for Sriracha, but some people do substitute Frank’s Hot Sauce for Sriracha.

- To keep the wonton cups crispy and prevent sticking to the surface, be sure to spray with cooking spray the surface that you will drape the wonton wrappers over.
- You can use boneless, skinless chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts, and it will work well in the recipe.
What To Serve With Chicken Wonton Tacos
Can I Make This Recipe Ahead of Time?
You can make the Bang Bang Sauce and the Tangy Coleslaw ahead of time, and refrigerate until ready to serve. However, I recommend cooking the chicken and wontons just before serving and assembling the tacos just before serving.
Can I Freeze Chicken Wonton Tacos?
I do not recommend freezing these Chicken Wonton Tacos as they are best when served shortly after cooking the chicken and wonton taco “shells.”
