A couple of weeks ago I visited beautiful Calgary, Alberta, Canada for work. I was excited as it was my first time to visit, and this was a perfect time of year with blue skies and a perfect temperature of around 70 degrees, which was a wonderful escape from the blistering heat and humidity down here.
A few weeks before the trip I contacted Tara of Noshing with the Nolands to see if we could meet while I was in Calgary. She thought it was a great idea and arranged with one of her PR contacts to have us meet for lunch and write a review of Wurst Uberkitchen. Wunderbar, a very cool German Restaurant and Beer Hall in the Mission district.
On Saturday I took a short taxi ride from my downtown hotel to Wurst. When I walked in, there was Tara sitting at a table, waiting for me. It was so fun to meet one of my favorite bloggers in person! We were online friends as we were in several of the same online blogging groups. But it was so great to meet in person.
Wurst was the perfect place to meet for lunch and their Saturday brunch. It was conveniently located for both of us and had two levels, a very nice, somewhat upscale yet casual dining room upstairs and a beer hall downstairs. We ate in the upstairs dining room, which had lots of light from all the windows. We sat at a table under a tree with lights. Next to us was a long bar with lots of flat screen TVs showing one of the World Cup games.
On Saturday Wurst serves food from their brunch menu from 10am to 3pm. Tara asked me if I had had a Caesar before. Of course, I’ve had a Caesar salad. No, she said, the drink, Caesar. No. I’d never had that Caesar. So Tara ordered me one. It tasted fantastic. It is similar to a bloody mary but has Clamato juice, a combination of clam and tomato juice. It is a little spicy but delicious.
Wurst’s menu is nothing like the German restaurants I am familiar with. It is probably more of a German fusion menu. Who would expect to see Ahi Tuna Tacos or Duck Frites, which are duck fat fries, with duck confit and classic aioli, at a German restaurant. Let me tell you, these Duck Frites tasted amazing! I had to force myself to stop eating them so I’d have room for the rest of the meal.
And it is a good thing I saved room for this gorgeous mile-high Schnitzel BLT on sourdough bread with truffle mayo and double smoked bacon. Are you hungry yet?
That is one beautiful and absolutely fantastic sandwich, served with a small side salad.
I absolutely loved this sandwich. I ate half for lunch and saved the other half for dinner.
Tara ordered this beautiful Wurst salad.
If you are in Calgary I highly recommend Wurst for their weekend brunch, served Saturday and Sunday, 10 am – 3pm.
Thank you to Tara and Wurst Uberkitchen. Wunderbar for a fun and memorable meal shared with a good blogging friend and good food and drinks. I can now say that I have noshed with one of the Nolands at Wurst! For the best casual brunch in Calgary, go to Wurst Uberkitchen. Wunderbar in the Mission District.

I think we were both the first bloggers that we have met in person (except Tara has met other local bloggers.)
