Teriyaki Chicken Stir Fry is a fast, easy, healthy, and delicious Asian stir fry with chicken and vegetables in a flavorful teriyaki sauce that can be on the table in 20 minutes. It tastes so good that the whole family will love it!
Teriyaki Chicken Stir Fry
This is one of my go-to weeknight recipes when I want dinner fast! Stir Fry recipes are generally 30-minute dinners (or less) and are chock full of healthy protein and vegetables with flavorful sauces. I made this stir fry with chicken but you could make it with beef, turkey, or pork if you like. To make a vegetarian teriyaki stir fry use tofu instead of chicken.
After you make this recipe, you will realize that there will be no need to order Chinese take out anymore because this Teriyaki Chicken Stir Fry is so quick and easy to make that it can be ready before someone goes and picks up the Chinese take out.
How To Make Teriyaki Chicken Stir Fry
Ingredients
I recommend gathering and chopping vegetables and ingredients in advance, like on the weekend so they are readily available on a busy weeknight to just throw in a stir fry. Below are the ingredients you will need to make the Teriyaki Chicken Stir Fry.
- Boneless, Skinless Chicken. I use chicken breasts but you could also use boneless, skinless chicken thighs as well. The thighs will have a little more fat and flavor but the chicken breasts often lower in calories and most people have those on hand. Chop the chicken into bite-sized pieces. That can be done in advance and stored in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook.
- Vegetables. Stir Fries are so versatile in that you can switch out vegetables to what you have on hand. You can even use a bag of frozen mixed vegetables if you like. Some of my favorite vegetables to use in a stir fry are carrots, red and green bell peppers, radishes, snow peas, and broccoli.
- Onion and Garlic. Along with the vegetables above, I always use chopped onions and minced garlic. I always have them on hand and they add so much flavor to any dish, especially this stir fry.
- Teriyaki Sauce. This adds so much sweet and savory Asian flavor to the dish. You can use store-bought or easily make-your-own teriyaki sauce.
How To Cook Teriyaki Chicken Stir Fry
- Add oil to a large wok or skillet, such as a cast iron skillet, over medium-high heat and when it is good and hot, add the chopped onions and cook for about 3 minutes until they are softened. Then add the minced garlic and stir for about a minute.
- Add the bite-sized chicken pieces to the pan and cook for about 5 minutes until the chicken is no longer pink and the juices run clear.
- Add the vegetables to the pan. In the photo, I added chopped red and green bell pepper, carrots, and sliced radishes.
- After the vegetables are softened, pour in the teriyaki sauce.
How To Make Teriyaki Sauce
If you want, you can certainly use store-bought teriyaki sauce in the Teriyaki Chicken Stir Fry and that would work out fine. However, it is super easy to make your own Teriyaki Sauce and that way you control the flavor and know exactly what ingredients are in the teriyaki sauce. I like making my own teriyaki sauce because the store-bought sauce is typically too salty for me. By making my own, I can control the amount of salt to my family’s taste and it gets. Tips For Making Teriyaki Chicken Stir Fry
- Chop Vegetables In Advance. Either shortly after bringing groceries home or on the weekend I like to chop the vegetables, including the onion and garlic in advance and place in individual covered plastic containers. That way, the vegetables are ready to cook whenever I’m ready which saves time on a busy weeknight.
- Make Teriyaki Sauce In Advance. I like to make a batch on the weekend and to keep on hand to use in several dishes. That way it is available when I need it for cooking. It is a lifesaver on a busy weeknight.
- Make sure cast iron skillet or wok is very hot. Before adding the chicken and vegetables to the skillet or wok, make sure the oil and the skillet are good and hot. Don’t add them to a cold skillet and then heat them up. If you don’t have a wok, a cast iron skillet works very well.
- Change up the vegetables. One night you can use snow peas, and on another night add broccoli. Switch up the vegetables each time you make the dish to keep it interesting and different and not boring.
- Change up the protein. This recipe works well with other types of protein also. For a Meatless Monday, use tofu instead of chicken for a vegetarian meal. You can add beef instead of chicken and combine it with broccoli for a Teriyaki Beef and Broccoli Stir Fry for a different twist.
