Best Classic Macaroni Salad Base Recipe Ingredients
- Elbow Macaroni. This pasta is typically the go to type of pasta for a macaroni salad. After all, the recipe is named after this pasta. However, you could also use other small pasta, such as Ditalini, which is a small tube shaped pasta.
- Mayonnaise. Mayonnaise adds the creaminess to the macaroni salad dressing. If you want to choose a lighter or healthier option, reduce the mayonnaise by half and use half Greek yogurt instead.
- Vinegar. I used white vinegar, but you could use apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar, or white wine vinegar instead.
- Sugar. If you add vinegar, you need to add sugar to offset the vinegar. It adds a little sweetness to give the dressing that distinctive taste.
- Mustard. This gives the dressing a little tanginess. I like to use regular yellow mustard but you could also use Dijon mustard as well.
How To Make The Best Classic Macaroni Salad
- Boil, rinse, and drain the elbow macaroni.
- Customize this macaroni salad to make it the Best Classic Macaroni Salad by adding these ingredients:

- Chopped Ham or Bacon – 1 cup chopped ham or 1/2 cup chopped bacon.

Tips For Perfect Macaroni Salad Every Time
- Make The Macaroni Salad A Day Ahead. I recommend making the salad the day (or night) before you are going to serve. That will allow the flavors to fully develop and will provide the best tasting macaroni salad possible.
- Rinse and Drain The Macaroni. Rinse the cooked macaroni with cold water to stop the pasta from cooking, and drain it thoroughly. If you have too much water in the dish, it will make the macaroni salad soupy and unappetizing.
- Measure The Mayonnaise. Measure the mayonnaise and don’t estimate. If you overestimate, you may end up with gloppy mess and if you underestimate, you will have a dry macaroni salad that no one will want. Get those measuring cups out and measure accurately to ensure perfect creamy macaroni salad every time.
