This easy Homemade Taco Seasoning is delicious, spicy, and healthier than store-bought taco seasoning. Use this Whole-30, Paleo, Gluten-Free, Keto, and Dairy-Free taco seasoning on tacos, taco salads, and other Mexican favorite dishes.
I have been meaning to post this Homemade Taco Seasoning for so long because I have used it for years. It is a staple in our pantry. I love this taco seasoning because it gives tacos, enchiladas, empanadas, and other Mexican dishes such much flavor in addition to just a little heat.
The cool thing about making taco seasoning from scratch is that you can adjust the quantity of each individual ingredient to customize it to your taste and health needs. If you want a little more spice just add a little more red pepper. If you like garlic, increase the garlic powder.
I originally started making this Homemade Taco Seasoning recipe because I was trying to reduce the amount of salt in my diet and now the packaged stuff tastes too salty to me. So this is all I use!
By the way, if you want to increase or decrease the amount of salt, please do so to your taste. In the recipe, I used a standard amount of salt typically used in these recipes. I generally use less salt, but most people would probably like at least a teaspoon of salt. Again, this recipe is customizable to your taste. Make it multiple times and tweak the amount of each ingredient so it tastes perfect to you!
Another benefit of this Homemade Taco Seasoning is that it naturally fits into just about any diet. It fits into Whole30, Paleo, Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free diets.
In addition, it is also very budget friendly. First of all, you probably have all the ingredients in your pantry now because they are very common ingredients that you can find at any grocery store. You can store this in an air-tight container and use it in several recipes.
Now that you have made the Homemade Taco Seasoning, what are you going to put it on? I have a few ideas.

Excellent question Kathy. Three (3) Tablespoons of the Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix equal a packet of seasoning.

I’m so excited to have taco seasoning handy in my house. No more special trips to the store to get taco packets!

I agree! If I can save a trip to the store, that is worth it!

Hi Margaret, I’m so glad you liked it. I agree. I like to make my own seasoning mixes because I can control the amount of all the ingredients, especially the salt. Store-bought mixes almost always are too salty. Be sure to check out my other seasoning mixes too like Greek Seasoning and Cajun Seasoning.
Steve Isaak says
If you are on a low salt diet, what would you replace the salt with?
Michele says
Hi Steve,
Just leave the salt out all together (or use a very small amount.) There is no good substitute in my opinion. The other seasonings provide lots of flavor to help compensate the loss of the salt.
Thanks,
Michele
