Greek Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps

Greek Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps are lighter versions of gyros or tacos served in lettuce wraps instead of pitas or tortillas! They fit into healthy low-carb, Paleo, and gluten-free diets.

I have partnered with Honeysuckle White Turkey to bring you this Greek Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps recipe.  All opinions are my own. 

These Greek Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps are delicious and full of flavor, yet they are low carb and gluten-free and fit into most healthy eating plans.

I love Greek food and flavors. There is something about the combination of lemon, oregano, cucumbers, and feta cheese that is so flavorful. To keep the meal high in protein and low in carbs, I used ground turkey instead of ground beef and created lettuce wraps instead of making tacos or gyros.

Greece is one of those places I would love to visit some day. I love the history, the culture, and the friendly people. I love the Mediterranean flavors used in Greek cooking. However, while lamb is popular in Greece, I prefer a lighter protein, such as turkey.

Most people think of turkey only for Thanksgiving. However, it is a delicious high protein poultry that is wonderful any time of year.

While I have not yet had the opportunity to travel to Greece, I did get to travel to the beautiful state of Virginia to see the Riverhill Turkey Farm thanks to Honeysuckle White brand Turkey.

Several other bloggers and I met Glenn and Sheri Rodes of Riverhill Turkey Farm. They are one of 700 independent family farmers that raise turkeys for Honeysuckle White and their sister brand on the East Coast, ShadyBrook Farms.

The farm has been in the family for multiple generations. Glenn grew up on the farm and now his kids and grandkids have that opportunity as well.

It was so nice to see how much Glenn and his family care about the turkeys and their well-being. They took numerous precautions before letting a few of us bloggers into the turkey barn. This is to prevent bacteria or diseases from entering the turkey barn.

As you can see from the pictures, we had to wear white coveralls over our clothing, hair nets, gloves, and then two plastic coverings over our feet, and in addition, they sprayed the bottom of our feet (on the second covering) to further prevent any bacteria or contaminants from entering the turkey barn.

Once inside they maintain the perfect temperature for the turkeys and ensure that all water is clean and pure and free of bacteria. I was quite impressed with the lengths they go to in order to ensure that the turkeys are healthy.

Another very important aspect is that the turkeys are raised without growth-promoting antibiotics, hormones or steroids, yet they are available at a price comparable to the same products from conventionally raised turkeys.

The turkeys I saw were healthy, happy with plenty of room to grow.

After the turkey farm tour, the Rodes invited us to their home where they so kindly made Kettle Corn for us. It was absolutely delicious. It was so good that I took a bag to go!

After meeting the Rodes and seeing their practices in raising the turkeys and learning about the great lengths they go to in order to keep the turkeys healthy and happy, I feel good about recommending Honeysuckle White and Shady Brook Farms turkey.

With the new year, I once again set a goal to eat healthier meals not only for New Year’s resolutions, but just to be healthier overall, and these Greek Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps are perfect for meeting these goals.

Of course, they start with lean, high protein Honeysuckle White ground turkey. I add my favorite Greek Seasoning, which includes lemon peel, garlic powder, oregano, and several other spices. Of course, you could use store bought.

If you don’t have all the ingredients to make the Greek seasoning, you could use Italian Seasoning and add lemon peel and extra garlic and oregano.

Another thing I love about these Greek Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps are all the fresh ingredients that you often find in Greek cooking. These lettuce wraps are topped with chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, and feta cheese.

I like to add a squeeze of lemon to the turkey and use the lemon slices as a pretty garnish.

I’m fortunate to live in a very diverse city that includes an awesome Greek festival each year. It is fun to see their culture including the Greek music, dances, and, of course, food. The gyros are always one of the most popular items. I love them, but they are heavier in calories than I would they could be.

These Greek Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps are my lighter version of a gyro.

I like to use crisp butter or bibb lettuce for these lettuce wraps. They are a little sturdier, which makes the lettuce wraps easier to handle.

Serve them with my Greek Potato Salad or my Greek Broccoli Slaw for a complete meal.

Another reason I love these Greek Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps is that they are so darn pretty with all the colorful vegetables and feta cheese.

Don’t forget the feta! It is a cheese with a lot of bold flavors and a few crumbles burst with flavor.

Ingredients

• ▢ 1 16-ounce package Honeysuckle White Ground Turkey
• ▢ 2 teaspoons store bought or homemade Greek seasoning*
• ▢ 1 Tablespoon olive oil
• ▢ 2 teaspoons minced garlic
• ▢ 12 leaves of butter lettuce or bibb lettuce
• ▢ 1/2 red onion chopped
• ▢ 1 large cucumber chopped
• ▢ 24 cherry tomatoes halved
• ▢ 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

Instructions 

• In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground turkey, stirring frequently, until no longer pink. Sprinkle Greek seasoning on the turkey and cook about 5 minutes more. Add garlic and cook about a minute longer. Remove from heat.
• Arrange the lettuce leaves on a serving platter. Add about 2 tablespoons of the ground turkey mixture in each of the lettuce leaves.
• Top each Greek Turkey Taco Lettuce Wrap with chopped red onions, chopped cucumbers, chopped tomatoes (halved cherry tomatoes), and crumbled feta cheese.
• Serve immediately.
