It is that time of year again. Time for the beginning of a new year. Time for new year’s resolutions to eat better, and be overall healthier. I make these resolutions every year. However, I don’t want to give up on taste and convenience no matter how healthy the food is.

I had heard about Sweet Earth all-natural, hand-crafted, vegan/vegetarian foods.  They have an excellent reputation from everything I have researched.

However, when they wanted me to try their Vegan Benevolent Bacon, I was skeptical. However, when I read that each serving has 10 grams of protein and 75% less fat than pork bacon, I knew I needed to give it a try.

Sweet Earth was kind enough to send me coupons to try the Benevolent Bacon. I found it at Kroger in their refrigerated healthy foods section.

Vegan Bacon Lettuce Tomato Sandwich

Sweet Earth Vegan Benevolent Bacon is quick and easy to prepare.

Use an electric skillet set to 375° F., and allow the skillet to heat completely and lightly oil with cooking oil. Do not use cooking spray.

Cook Benevolent Bacon for about 2-3 minutes per side, turning only once. While it cooks, occasionally check the underside and look for discoloration and a dryer overall appearance. The color will become a darker red and may even begin to have some dark brown/black spots or edges. Turn and repeat for the remaining side.

Remove from the skillet and set aside to cool. The Benevolent Bacon will also continue to become crisper as it cools.

Then the true test begins. The taste! It is smothered in a hickory sage sauce so it is loaded with flavor. In addition, it has rosemary, cumin, and garlic for an extra burst of flavor. As the package says, it truly is smoky, saucy, and savory.

For me, the true taste test is making a Bacon Lettuce and Tomato (BLT) Sandwich. The result was delicious. The bacon was crisp, smoky and flavorful.

Ingredients

  • 1 5.5-ounce package Sweet Earth Vegan Benevolent Bacon
  • 8 slices Vegan bread
  • 8 lettuce leaves
  • 2 small tomatoes sliced (I used sliced cherry tomatoes)
  • Vegan mayonnaise
Prevent your screen from going dark

Instructions 

  • Use an electric skillet set to 375° F., and allow the skillet to heat completely and lightly oil with cooking oil. Do not use cooking spray.
  • Cook Benevolent Bacon for about 2-3 minutes per side, turning only once. While it cooks, occasionally check the underside and look for discoloration and a dryer overall appearance. The color will become a darker red and may even begin to have some dark brown/black spots or edges. Turn and repeat for the remaining side.
  • While the bacon is cooking, toast the bread.
  • Spread the Vegan mayonnaise on the toast and top with lettuce, tomatoes, and Sweet Earth Vegan Benevolent Bacon.
  • Cover with the second piece of toast.
  • Enjoy!

    This looks great Michele! I became vegetarian (mostly vegan) last May, but I still get that itch sometimes. I will definitely look for the Benevolent bacon at my store, and request it if it is not carried.

    Thanks Erica. I did not realize you were vegetarian. The Benevolent Bacon was good. If you have Kroger in your area, they carried it.
