This weekend I made Peanut Butter Banana Pupcakes because we celebrated our dog, Reagan’s 7th birthday. We adopted Reagan, a 30-lb red cocker spaniel 2 years ago on Mother’s Day from the Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Austin / San Antonio, and his birthday was just a couple of weeks later. It usually falls around Memorial Day Weekend.
Reagan is our second dog that we have adopted. Back in 2008 we adopted a yellow Labrador retriever named Rosie, an 85-lb giant that was all heart.
Why I Make Dog Treats At Home
I have made these treats for both dogs based on my experience with each. When we first adopted Rosie, the yellow lab, she had a cast-iron stomach. She would eat any and everything she could. We had to continually watch her weight. We joked that we should have named her Hoover for vacuuming up food and treats.
However, after 6 months, we had to make a drastic change to her diet because Rosie was diagnosed with cancer and given 2 months to live. Our vet did surgery to remove the tumor but then referred her to a veterinary oncologist. (Yes, there is such a thing.)
One of the first things our veterinary oncologist recommended is that we switch Rosie to a grain-free diet, which we did and she stayed on for the rest of her life.
Long story short, After about 6 months of treatment, Rosie was cancer-free and remained that way for the rest of her life. She lived to be 16 years old, 8 years after her cancer diagnosis. To read more about Rosie’s story, visit Rosie’s Road.
Today, we have our sweet Reagan, a feisty yet adorable red-colored cocker spaniel. Unlike Rosie, Reagan is very picky about what he eats and has a sensitive stomach. After trying several store-bought dog foods, we gave up and bought dog food from our vet for dogs with sensitive tummies. Reagan is the only dog I have ever had that turns his nose up at many treats. He is very picky.
So I made these Peanut Butter and Banana Pupcakes for Reagan, and what do you know, he liked them, a lot, and they didn’t upset his stomach. There were also no undesirable after effects. Yay! So now these are our go-to pup treats for Reagan because they have his two favorite foods, peanut butter, and banana.
I like these cupcakes because they are grain-free and don’t upset his tummy, as well as budget-friendly.

Love this recipe!! Thank you!! This would be my second time making these Pupcake’s…I was wondering if the peanut butter can be substituted for something else, like pumpkin?
I have 4 senior mini schnauzers and I worry about the fat content. .

I was wondering the same!
Michele says
Hi Jen,
I have not tried the recipe with pumpkin, and am not sure if it would have the same texture, but you could try it.

I used a banana, a few tablespoons of pumpkin, only about 2 T pb…failed this attempt (too runny), 2nd time used 1 full banana, a few T pumpkin, ab 3/4 t baking soda, about 4 T pb, 2 eggs-and they turned out good. My golden retriever loves these! I don’t even top with extra pb and figure they are a relatively healthy treat for him…I have to admit I even like them.

Hey Michele, so have you ever made a small cake out of this recipe? wondered if it would bake well. I’m not a baker so I thought I’d ask before I tried 🙂
Thanks
Trish
Michele says
Hi Trish,
I have not made a cake out of this batter. My goal when I made it was to make a treat for my dog which had very minimal ingredients, and since he was a small dog, the small “pupcakes” worked. So I didn’t try a larger cake. This recipe typically does not have all the ingredients that a cake would have, such as flour. However, if you want to pour the batter into a small cake pan and spread the batter out so it is not too thick, then you can try it.
Thanks,
Michele

I just baked it in a small cake pan and it worked perfectly. 18 minutes

Hi! I was wondering if you can freeze the cupcakes! I have 2 chihuahua mixes and these are alot of cupcakes.
Michele says
Hi Elizabeth,
Yes, you can freeze the pupcakes. If possible, I recommend freezing them without the icing. Place the pupcakes in a freezer-safe, airtight container and you can freeze for 30 days.
Thanks,
Michele
