Peanut Butter and Banana Pupcakes

Peanut Butter and Banana Pupcakes are an easy, delicious treat for your dog! They are dog-approved in our house! Grain free with just four ingredients, they are great for picky dogs or those with sensitive tummies.

This weekend I made Peanut Butter Banana Pupcakes because we celebrated our dog, Reagan’s 7th birthday. We adopted Reagan, a 30-lb red cocker spaniel 2 years ago on Mother’s Day from the Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Austin / San Antonio, and his birthday was just a couple of weeks later. It usually falls around Memorial Day Weekend.  

Reagan is our second dog that we have adopted. Back in 2008 we adopted a yellow Labrador retriever named Rosie, an 85-lb giant that was all heart.

Why I Make Dog Treats At Home

I have made these treats for both dogs based on my experience with each. When we first adopted Rosie, the yellow lab, she had a cast-iron stomach. She would eat any and everything she could. We had to continually watch her weight. We joked that we should have named her Hoover for vacuuming up food and treats. 

However, after 6 months, we had to make a drastic change to her diet because Rosie was diagnosed with cancer and given 2 months to live. Our vet did surgery to remove the tumor but then referred her to a veterinary oncologist. (Yes, there is such a thing.)

One of the first things our veterinary oncologist recommended is that we switch Rosie to a grain-free diet, which we did and she stayed on for the rest of her life.

Long story short, After about 6 months of treatment, Rosie was cancer-free and remained that way for the rest of her life. She lived to be 16 years old, 8 years after her cancer diagnosis. To read more about Rosie’s story, visit Rosie’s Road. 

Today, we have our sweet Reagan, a feisty yet adorable red-colored cocker spaniel. Unlike Rosie, Reagan is very picky about what he eats and has a sensitive stomach. After trying several store-bought dog foods, we gave up and bought dog food from our vet for dogs with sensitive tummies. Reagan is the only dog I have ever had that turns his nose up at many treats. He is very picky. 

So I made these Peanut Butter and Banana Pupcakes for Reagan, and what do you know, he liked them, a lot, and they didn’t upset his stomach. There were also no undesirable after effects. Yay! So now these are our go-to pup treats for Reagan because they have his two favorite foods, peanut butter, and banana.

I like these cupcakes because they are grain-free and don’t upset his tummy, as well as budget-friendly.

What Do I Need To Make Peanut Butter Banana Pupcakes

To make Peanut Butter Banana Pupcakes, you only need 4 ingredients:

• 4 Tablespoons smooth Peanut Butter 
• 1 Banana
• 1 Egg
• 1/2 teaspoon Baking soda

How Many Pupcakes Does This Make?

This recipe makes 24 mini pupcakes or 12 regular sized pupcakes. To give you an idea on which size to make for your dog, I make 24 mini cupcakes for Reagan, my 30-lb cocker spaniel, but for Rosie, an 85-lb Labrador retriever, I would make regular sized pupcakes. 

How To Make Peanut Butter Banana Pupcakes

1. Mash the banana with a fork.
2. Add 1 egg and mix the egg with the banana with a fork.
3. Then spoon in 4 tablespoons of peanut butter.
4. Add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda.
5. Stir until everything is combined and smooth.
6. Then using a cookie scoop, scoop the pupcake batter into a 24-mini cupcake pan.
7. Bake in a preheated 350 degree F oven for about 8 to 10 minutes.
8. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack. Cool before serving to your pet.

How To Make Banana Frosting For Pupcakes

1. You can either serve the pupcakes as is or with a banana “frosting.”
2. For ingredients, you will need 1 banana and 2 tablespoons of peanut butter. 
3. Using a fork mix the two ingredients together and spoon on top of a pupcake. 

What To Serve With Pupcakes?

Normally, with my recipes, I include serving suggestions for what to serve with it. But for this recipe, I needed my dog’s help. So Reagan gave me his suggestions on what to serve with the pupcakes.

• T-bone steaks, cooked medium-rare.
• Boiled Chicken with rice.
• Broccoli (Reagan loves broccoli. Yes, he’s has weird that way. LOL!)
• More peanut butter – maybe even put peanut butter on the steak, chicken, or broccoli. (He thinks peanut butter should go on every food.)
